They can be found in the art of the Baroque, which cultivated the principle of yoking together dissimilar things and endowing witty significance to the central aesthetic category. The diffusion of genres around the turn of the eighteenth century, which has already been noted, is also a highly indicative symptom. Approaching the “galant genre” from that position, we shall find nothing paradoxical in its connection with allegory, which in the era when the academic hierarchy of genres was forming was esteemed even more highly than historical painting. If we go looking for the roots of the genre in the narrowly French tradition, then we must inevitably consider the brilliant Jacques Callot.
